- **Event Description**: A palavra serenata lembra-nos cenários rústicos e trovas de amor. Porém, desde finais do século XVIII, o termo estendeu-se também ao domínio da música instrumental. Tratava-se de peças de curta duração, vocacionadas para o entretenimento social e tocadas por pequenos agrupamentos, na maioria dos casos por uma só família de instrumentos, fossem sopros ou cordas. Com o passar do tempo, o género assumiu maior ambição artística. É o caso das serenatas reunidas neste programa, assinadas por dois compositores que se conheciam bem.

O Op. 44 de Dvořák surgiu no final da década de 1870, sem flauta, mas com três trompas. Nele combinam-se reminiscências do estilo de Mozart e a inconfundível sonoridade da música tradicional da região da Boémia. O Op. 16 de Brahms foi composto duas décadas antes. Trata-se de cinco pequenas peças nas quais já se vislumbra a grandiosidade das quatro sinfonias compostas mais tarde.
